Target Audience
Below is a discussion of our target audience:

Influences

This trailer is influential to us in terms of its structure. We are thinking of including a shot of a doctor examining the main character at the start of our trailer, similar to the beginning of this trailer. However we have decided against having the doctor talking on screen and have instead decided to have a voice over of the doctor describing the disease Narcolepsy. So like this trailer we will have no music at the start, only a speech from the doctor, then we will start the music after the doctor scene like this trailer does. Similar to this trailer, where it shows a montage of the main character's memories of himself and his girlfriend, we will have a montage of our main character falling asleep in odd places. This trailer seems to tell the story without giving too much of the plot away, which is what we want our trailer to do.

'Me, Myself and Irene' is influential for the genre because it concerns a man with a mental disorder, yet the film portrays it in a humorous way by using slapstick comedy (e.g. when the woman kicks Jim Carrey's character in the head and he falls over the fence and down the hill) which is what we will also be doing in our teaser trailer. This trailer makes you want to go and see the film without actually giving away too much of the plot.

Certain micro-aspects in the 'Prince of Persia' teaser trailer have influenced us by showing how the camera shots, sound and mise-en-scene create the atmosphere of the film and entices the viewers to want to watch it. Firstly, the trailer uses a voice-over who explains the Prince's 'challenge' and during which there is a montage of long-takes that illustrate what she's saying. There is also a low pitched score playing while she is talking, which we're not planning to do, however it reinforces the intensity of the film. There are numerous close-up shots of the characters' eyes which also create the tense atmosphere to the trailer and makes it more personal, which we find useful because we'd like to put close ups of our protagonist's eyes before she falls asleep. The aerial shots of the deserts show the length the characters have to travel, and we were considering that perhaps, if possible we could get some aerial shots of London.
The costume also plays an important role by showing the importance of each character and the time the film is set in. Seeing the costume in this trailer has brought these points to our attention so we are now going to think very carefully about the style of clothes our actors wear in our teaser trailer.
Initial Ideas
In the process of planning, we came up with a few ideas for our movie which are as follows:
1) a Romantic Comedy about harsh break ups. However, we felt that this would not be practical because we don't have very many actors who are willing to participate in the film.
2) a Romantic Comedy about a college reunion where a girl who used to be made fun of turns out rich and successful and the boy who made fun of her turned out to be very unsuccessful. We decided against this because again, we lacked actors and the set would cause complications.
3) a Comedy about a girl who mysteriously falls asleep spontaneously and tries to figure out how to stop it. This is the concept we chose because we thought the trailer could be a simple montage of her falling asleep and perhaps a clue to the audience that the sleeping is caused by something sort of supernatural. We wanted to go for a slightly magical element in the story because the idea about falling asleep spontaneously sounds like the disease called narcolepsy and therefore we wanted to be careful not to offend those who are sensitive to this.
Synopsis
Kayla wakes up one day in a strange, deserted alley in London, and ever since then, she falls asleep spontaneously. It goes on for a few days, so she follows her bizarre aunt's advice and goes to the GP. The doctor does several medical tests on her and concludes that while Kayla possesses the same symptoms as someone who has narcolepsy, she shows no signs of the disease internally and therefore it cannot be possible that she has the disease. On her way home from the GP, she falls asleep and has a memorable dream about an encounter with a strange lady who tells her that it is not a simple 'mundane' issue that can be fixed and that she has been cursed and needs to find the "Bellicus" who she will be able to find through the clues in her strange dreams.
So Kayla goes on her journey to find this "Bellicus". Her first clue: London. But on the way, she finds her dreams have led her into odd situations.
What are film trailers for?

Trailers are an advertising technique that shows some of the best and most important scenes in an upcoming film. They give an insight into the plot, genre and any stars that are being cast. They are used to get the public excited about and interested in the film to increase the viewers of the upcoming film. The more attention grabbing trailers, with good music and titles, would gain the most interest from the public. A trailer does not need to be a summary of the film, but instead needs to stimulate the public’s interest in the film, so that a general assumption can be made about the film before it is released.

What is a Teaser Trailer?
Inception

The teaser trailer for Inception uses mainly quick action clips and a lot of special effects to entice action lovers. The thing that stands out the most about this trailer is the lack of dialogue, but even without dialogue the trailer is enticing and very well done. This shows the audience that you don’t even need to have dialogue in this trailer to make it good. It also gets people talking because it is not a common thing to do in trailers. The music used is intense and loud, showing that the film will be a thriller and will involve a lot of gripping action scenes. As in most films, the stars name is written in big, bold capital letters, so that fans of the star may wish to go to see the film to see them, even without knowing what it is about. The tagline for this film is ‘your mind is the scene of the crime’ which gives away the director as he is known for films in the same genre as this one. This will encourage the people who have enjoyed his other work to watch Inception as they will think it will be as good as the others.

Cemetery junction

This is a very unique trailer which is not that surprising as you learn to expect the unexpected from Ricky Gervais. The teaser trailer has no clips of the film, just a white background with the makers and actors talking. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are mocking Ralph Fiennes because he is not normally in comedies. The fact that they are mocking him shows that it is a comedy; you can also tell that it is a comedy because Ricky Gervais is staring in it. Having Ralph Fiennes in the trailer this way draws people in because they may be fans of his and may want to see him in a comedy. The fact that Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant made the film also draws people in because they think it must be a good film. The trailer seems to be mocking the usual Hollywood film trailers because they haven’t told or shown the audience any of the film, and have instead just been talking about nothing to do with the film, whereas Hollywood trailers are more action packed and complicated. This trailer takes it a step further by having a typical Hollywood type title and voice over man introducing the film with typical dramatic music in the background.

Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind

This trailer starts off in a way that makes you think the film is a thriller or horror as it starts with a doctor/scientist that is talking about the mind – sort of like an advert. However with the music, which is happy, you can tell it is a comedy. The man is cut into blocks and is moved around seemingly randomly along with pictures of bodies and a brain, giving the feel of a mind being broken apart and analysed. As soon as you see Jim Carrey you have no doubts that this is a comedy as he is known for appearing in comedies. The cuts after the doctor/scientist scene seem to go along with the beat of the happy, jumpy music, which also shows that it is a comedy. Jim Carrey’s name is in huge bold letters on a bright yellow and orange background which again are cut into blocks. The background looks like a sun which goes with the title of the film – “Eternal Sunshine”

Paranormal activity

This teaser trailer shows short clips of the film and also shows the audiences reaction, which is a great way to captivate their target audience. It portrays the film in a good light because it makes it seem scary as most of the audience tend to scream at multiple times during the trailer. The trailer introduces the characters and shows clips of the scariest parts of the film.

Live free or die hard

The tagline: ‘on July 4th the choice will be clear: Live free or die hard’ attracts people who have enjoyed the Die Hard series so far because it already tells everyone what film it is without actually having to see any scenes from the film. The tagline is cut down so that it ties in with the clips of the film e.g. ‘die hard’ action shots of crashes, flames, bombs etc. The tagline and the titles are small and get highlighted by a thin white line, which makes it more dramatic and seem slightly computerised which is tied in with the film as there is a lot of computer hacking in it. The music is mysterious and calmer than some film trailers in this category yet still tense and gives a feeling of adventure. It stops once the title appears and then the only bit of dialogue that is in the trailer comes up - “why are you so calm have you done that stuff before?” After being ignored by Bruce Willis there is a dramatic boom from the music.
Trailer analysis

Yes Man

This trailer is different from most as it starts with a small screen in the middle of the page showing quick clips of children who are saying no. There is music in the background of these clips that has lyrics of ‘no’ which, whilst the music itself isn’t exactly cheerful and extremely upbeat, shows that the film is a comedy because of the lyrics. The clips are of Jim Carrey say no in lots of different circumstances, however in roughly the middle of the trailer Jim Carrey starts to say yes to everything. Just the idea of saying yes to everything creates humour and attracts the audience as they would want to see what situations he gets himself into. The voice over is in a cheerful and happy tone which portrays the genre of this film effectively. The titles are in red and black going along with the theme of Christmas as that is when the film is released. Whilst the trailer isn’t particularly laugh out loud funny it does portray it as a humorous film, mainly because Jim Carrey is the star, but also because of the plot line.

The last Airbender

The trailer introduces the character through a continuous shot of the last airbender doing moves that creates air. Having just one cut from the film is strange but seems to work for this trailer as it tells the story sufficiently and leaves the rest as a mystery. There is a voice over that informs you of the general plot of the film so you don’t really need anymore clips. The music is quite Indie yet dramatic which goes well with the film. The title is in blue with what looks like smoke behind it but may be portraying air. The title looks slightly eerie and serious, going well with the type of film. The cliff that comes at the end of the trailer adds to the drama because of how high it is from the sea, and the war ships show that it has a dramatic plot and makes it seem more interesting. Finishing on this shot makes the film more dramatic and makes you want to find out what happens next.

Meet the Fockers

This trailer has the funniest clips from the film which captivates the audiences’ attention and shows them that it will be a funny film. It tells you that “you have met the parents” so the audience knows that this film is the sequel to Meet the Parents, this will encourage those who enjoyed the first film to go and see this one as they will believe that it is funny. The titles are the same style as the last film, also allowing people to acknowledge the link between the two films. This trailer tells the general story but also leaves a lot to mystery, making people want to see what is going to happen.
