Trailer analysis

Yes Man

This trailer is different from most as it starts with a small screen in the middle of the page showing quick clips of children who are saying no. There is music in the background of these clips that has lyrics of ‘no’ which, whilst the music itself isn’t exactly cheerful and extremely upbeat, shows that the film is a comedy because of the lyrics. The clips are of Jim Carrey say no in lots of different circumstances, however in roughly the middle of the trailer Jim Carrey starts to say yes to everything. Just the idea of saying yes to everything creates humour and attracts the audience as they would want to see what situations he gets himself into. The voice over is in a cheerful and happy tone which portrays the genre of this film effectively. The titles are in red and black going along with the theme of Christmas as that is when the film is released. Whilst the trailer isn’t particularly laugh out loud funny it does portray it as a humorous film, mainly because Jim Carrey is the star, but also because of the plot line.

The last Airbender

The trailer introduces the character through a continuous shot of the last airbender doing moves that creates air. Having just one cut from the film is strange but seems to work for this trailer as it tells the story sufficiently and leaves the rest as a mystery. There is a voice over that informs you of the general plot of the film so you don’t really need anymore clips. The music is quite Indie yet dramatic which goes well with the film. The title is in blue with what looks like smoke behind it but may be portraying air. The title looks slightly eerie and serious, going well with the type of film. The cliff that comes at the end of the trailer adds to the drama because of how high it is from the sea, and the war ships show that it has a dramatic plot and makes it seem more interesting. Finishing on this shot makes the film more dramatic and makes you want to find out what happens next.

Meet the Fockers

This trailer has the funniest clips from the film which captivates the audiences’ attention and shows them that it will be a funny film. It tells you that “you have met the parents” so the audience knows that this film is the sequel to Meet the Parents, this will encourage those who enjoyed the first film to go and see this one as they will believe that it is funny. The titles are the same style as the last film, also allowing people to acknowledge the link between the two films. This trailer tells the general story but also leaves a lot to mystery, making people want to see what is going to happen.
